Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
- 8 slices of rye bread
- 4 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Thousand Island dressing optional
Instructions:
Make 4 patties out of the ground beef that are all the same size
Add salt and pepper to taste to the patties
In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the patties for three to four minutes on each side, or until they're done the way you like them
Take it out and set it aside
In the same pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and add the thinly sliced onions
Cook them until they turn caramelized and golden brown
Take it out and set it aside
Each piece of rye bread should have one side brushed with butter
Cover four of the bread slices with a slice of Swiss cheese
Put a cooked patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese on top of the cheese
Add the last few slices of bread on top, buttered side facing down
Place the clean skillet over medium-low heat
Grill the sandwiches for two to three minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and the cheese melts
Cut the Patty Melts in half across the middle and serve them hot
Serve with Thousand Island dressing on the side so that you can dip or drizzle it on
